| I remember, as a young girl, visiting my Welsh grandmother on her farm in central Illinois. Walking through the front door, the scents of cinnamon bread, chocolate cake and sugar cookies filled the air. Aahhh! The intoxicating aromas welcomed me in and said, "Make yourself at home; we have been expecting you." My mom wasn't much of a baker. Oh, don't get me wrong. She loved to cook wonderful meals like roast beef, chicken and dumplings, and spaghetti with meatballs as big as your fist, but baking wasn't her thing. Grandma had the corner on that market. I learned how to bake by watching my Grandmother make all of her "magical" delicacies. When I grew up, I wanted my home to smell that deliciously inviting, too! |
I grew up watching public television, especially on Saturday mornings. While other kids were watching cartoons, I was watching educational shows like, This Old House, The Joy Company. I would sit on the floor, smack dab in front of the TV screen, and be glued to it for hours. I attended a junior college and then KU as a Biology major. ( Science and math were my other passions... go figure.) Chemistry absolutely fascinated me. I enjoyed being in the lab, conducting experiments, and writing lab reports, but half way through my 3rd year, I realized that lab work wasn't what I wanted to be doing for the rest of my life. My "head" was in it, but my heart wasn't. I still made desserts for others, though. They would tell me they enjoyed the goodies and how blessed they were to receive them. I loved it! To be a blessing to others...that's where my heart was! At the age of thirty-...something, I took all that I had learned by watching Bob Ross and Julia Child, combined it with Physics, Chemistry, and Math, and started Annie O's Custom Creations out of my own home. I am still blessed to be able to work from home, but now I have a separate, full baking kitchen dedicated solely to Custom Creations. Now, 5 years into my business, through trial, error, and sheer invention, I have learned how to turn a hunk of chocolate cake into a realistic-looking fish or a gravity-defying wedding cake tower. See, science and art really do go together! Next up....drip-less ice cream! |
